In December 2024, Google and Samsung unveiled Project Moohan, the first XR headset they developed together. Samsung made its hardware, and Google provided it with an all-new operating system made for AR/VR/XR headsets and glasses: Android XR. Back then, the company announced that Gemini AI would be a core part of the OS.
However, we didn’t have much information about how it looks on that product or the recently announced reference Android XR-based AR glasses that Google and Samsung are developing together. Well, not anymore. At Google I/O 2025, Google showcased how Gemini AI will look and work on Android XR devices in real-world scenarios.
On Android XR glasses, which will be equipped with cameras to see the world around you, you will be able to summon Gemini by just saying Gemini. The OS will then overlay Gemini's user interface on your view of the world. The UI looks simple, clean, and modern, and takes a very small amount of space (most likely to avoid obstructions in your view).
Google demonstrated four of the many capabilities of Gemini on Android XR glasses. First, if you are talking to someone and they are speaking in a language that you don’t understand, you can ask Gemini to translate it into your language, and it will do that in real time, automatically detecting language and overlaying the translation on your view of the world.
Second, it can send messages for you, which is a very basic functionality. Third, while you are walking on the street, you can ask it to suggest places around you, such as restaurants, and when you do that, it will not just provide you with suggestions but also help you reach it by overlaying Google Maps navigation on your view of the world.
Fourth, Gemini can help you take photos hands-free. More specifically, you can ask it to take a picture, and it will do that for you. You can also ask it to mark those pictures as your favourites. On Android XR headsets, Gemini can show you any place on Earth in an immersive view (most likely, with help from Google Maps and Google Earth).
