While the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition is quite thin and has decent camera hardware, it still isn't as good as foldable phones from Chinese brands. The book-style foldable phones from China have thinner bodies, bigger batteries, and faster charging. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 could be the world's thinnest foldable phone, though, and it could use titanium.

Galaxy Z Fold 7 could use titanium backplate

According to a report from TheElec, Samsung plans to use titanium in the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and its first tri-fold phone, which are expected to be launched in the second half of the year. Titanium will reportedly be used in the backplate of both devices, unlike the Galaxy S25 Ultra, which uses titanium for the frame.

This isn't the first time the South Korea tech giant is using titanium in its foldable phone. The Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition also features a titanium backplate.

A backplate is a component that is used as a support between the hinge and the foldable panel. Earlier, Samsung used stainless steel backplate in the Galaxy Fold and the Galaxy Z Fold 2. However, it switched to carbon fiber for the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and continued using it until the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition, which used titanium. Titanium is light yet strong but harder to produce.

The report claims that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 won't feature an S Pen digitizer to reduce the overall thickness of the phone. And the switch to titanium will also help the cause.

Samsung Display is reportedly developing an OLED panel that works with a stylus without the need for a digitizer. Apple uses a similar technology, where the stylus has a built-in battery for tip position recognition. Samsung is working with HiDeep for this technology, but it isn't clear when it will be used in Galaxy Z series phones.
